This is a fully functional demo version. Everything works. The demo will run for 55 minutes before it gives you a 5 minute warning then times out and quits. You can run it as many times as you like. It will run with 4D 3.5.3 or greater and 4D Server 3.5.3 or greater. This version will not run with 4D v6. A v6 demo will be available soon. Complete developer and end-user documentation is provided in pdf format.
Cross-Platform Support
This version will run on a 4D Server (68000 or PowerPC version) serving both Macintosh and Windows clients. To run on both platforms you will need to download the demos for both the Macintosh and Windows versions in order to have the Mac4DX and Win4DX folders. The structure is compiled for 68000, PowerPC and Pentium processors. If you need a version that will run on a 486 processor, please let us know.
Double-Byte Character Support
This structure has also been compiled to be compatible with the Script Manager so it should run under versions of 4D and the MacOS that support double-byte characters (like Japanese, Chinese, etc). However, we have not tested this so if you run it in this type of environment please let us know how it runs.
Running the Email Express Demo
1. Drag the Email Express structure to your copy of 4D v3.5.3 or greater or 4D Server 1.5.3 or greater.
2. To log in, select the Demo user (there is no password).
3. Before you can send or receive mail, you will need to setup your account preferences. There are two demo accounts already setup. To setup your account preferences, click on the Prefs button.
Notes
• Don't change the name of the demo account. There must be an account that matches the name you log in with or things won't work. You can change any of the other account preferences. If you want to create another account, you can do so by switching to the User environment and creating a new record in the Accounts file.
• Don't change the name of the Email Express structure file or some of the demonstration externals installed will not work.
A Few Unresolved Issues
• If you access Email Express from 4D Client running under Windows 95 or Windows NT Workstation 4.0 (and mostly likely Windows NT Server 4.0), you will find that the first column in the Email Browser window contains numbers instead of the icons that are displayed when you run Email Express under any other circumstances.
• Scrollbars don't appear in the short header of an incoming message.
• The password font used to mask passwords in several places, doesn't work under Windows. We do have a work around in place for this.
• Reminder sounds for unread mail don't play under Windows.
• If you access Email Express from 4D Client running under Windows 95 or Windows NT Workstation 4.0 (and mostly likely Windows NT Server 4.0) with Email Express running on a Macintosh server, you will find that the many operations take up to twice as long as they do on a comparable Macintosh system. This is a known bug in 4D which should be fixed by ACI very shortly.
